Colleen Bradford KrantzPen Name: Colleen Bradford Krantz

Comments from the author about writing: I was a journalist before I was a book author/documentary filmmaker so explore events, places and people in the world that I would personally want to learn more about. I try to tell any story so the reader grows to understand the real people in my story in the same way they would grow to understand a created, fictional character. I also work hard to set my own viewpoints aside as much as possible in hopes of telling a story that is as even-handed as possible. I’ve created the News Tutor app/website as a result of those strong views about how the media should handle its role.

Literary awards received and date received:

  • “West by Orphan Train,” the documentary that Krantz directed and co-wrote, won a regional Emmy Award in 2015. It also won a national Clarion Award and a national Leadership in History Award.
  • "Train to Nowhere," the immigration documentary Krantz wrote and co-produced while doing the book of the same name, was nominated for a regional Emmy. It also won the 2011 Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival's best professional documentary award and Iowa Connections Award.

  • “Train to Nowhere; Inside an Immigrant Death Investigation” (Ice Cube Press, 2011), was a finalist in “Best Books 2011” contest by USA Book News, non-fiction multicultural category.

  • Numerous state and regional journalism awards from 1994 to 2005.

Are you willing to do programs for schools, libraries, or other groups? Yes

If you are willing to do programs, will you charge a fee?  Yes, negotiable. Would like to receive at least $150 but may need to adjust based on distance and time involved. Most often, I do programs about the orphan train era, immigration, writing, or how to be a wise news consumer.
