The Lacona Public Library, Iowa State Poet Laureate Mary Swander and performer Karan Founds-Benton invite you and your staff to a dramatic performance and discussion of Mary Swander's critically acclaimed poetic narrative,
Driving The Body Back.
This is event is part of a special Small Communities Library Tour sponsored by The Puffin Foundation, Humanities Iowa, The Lacona Library and members of the Lacona Community. It features a dramatic one person stage adaptation of Driving The Body Back, a fictionalized poetic account of Swander's journey to drive her mother's body back for burial, accompanied by her Godmother who tells her stories of family members, how they lived and died. Bootleggers, healers, drifters, farmers, tenders of dogs and the tenderhearted come to life as the character of Mary reflects back to her Grandmother what she has learned about her Irish-Immigrant pioneering family.
This staging has toured the mid-west and has received acclaim from audience and critics alike in Indianapolis, Kansas City, St. Paul and Chicago.
