Anna McNulty’s letter to Alex Sanchez, “The Rainbow Boys”
Dear Alex Sanchez,
Your book, “The Rainbow Boys,” touched my heart. I realize how many people discriminate against gay and lesbian people. During the summer, a friend and I protested against a religious rights group from Topeka, Kansas. They came to Des Moines to demonstrate because a Lincoln High School student received the Mathew Shepard Scholarship. I had never seen more hatred in my life! After reading this book, it made me feel even better and more proud of what we had done to support this great student.
I admire many people in this book. I admire Nelson and Kyle for not being ashamed for who they are, and I admire Jason for standing up for Nelson and Kyle. I also respect Jason because of how strong he was when his father left. I would never forget about why my father left me if this happened to me. The story also filled me with rage! I can’t believe how some people can treat other people so horribly because they are different. No one should be teased or bullied for any reason. At the very end, the book filled me with hope. After establishing the Gay and Straight Alliance, it seemed that the story could not go wrong. Finally, the boys had a group of people who would understand them and give them support. I love your book, and can’t wait to read the sequel.
Sincerely,
Anna McNulty
