Leon Walker, originally from Rossie, Iowa, recalled, “My friend was dating a girl in Royal. I imagine, I was on braces and crutches.  But, I had dear friends who took me everywhere they went.  They went to dances and shows, moving picture shows – and, I met this girl.  Bless her heart.  She accepted me the way I was.  She was a senior in high school.  Then, I left and went to Drake University, and I was so afraid she wouldn’t wait for me, but she did. We went together about a year, and then we got married.  I still didn’t have a job.  Imagine that.”
