Sandy Benter lived on a farm in rural Dike until her senior year in high school. In 1952, at the age of seven, Sandy contracted polio. She recalled, “It was at the end of July and I had a high fever. I was burning up. It was very, very hot.” Sandy worked for 38 years in library science. She reflected, “[Polio] does not have to be the determining factor of how you live your life. Sure, there are some things I cannot do that I probably would have done. But, I guess I would turn that around and say that I feel like there is probably 98 percent of things that you do too…You either have a good attitude or you don’t.”
