Bakalar, of Woodward, Iowa (Dallas Co.), served as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa during the polio epidemic of 1952.  She also contracted the virus while working “dietary” at the hospital. In her interview, she talks of the care she gave to iron lung patients and spoke about the heartache she felt for polio patients that were abandoned by their spouses.
