Robert James Waller is an Iowa author, professor, musician, and photographer. Waller was born August 1, 1939 in Rockford, Iowa. He received his BA and MA from University of Northern Iowa and his PhD in business from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, Bloomington. Waller was a professor at the University of Northern Iowa from 1968 to 1991 where he taught management, economics, and applied mathematics courses. He served as dean of UNI’s College of Business from 1979 to 1986.
Waller has worked throughout the world as a consultant and is an authority on the topic of problem solving and decision making. His non-fiction book, The Summer Nights Never End...Until They Do: Life, Liberty, and the Lure of the Short-Run, addresses the problem solving model which measures success and foregoing immediate gratification
His novel, The Bridges of Madison County, sold over 12 million copies and is published in 40 languages. The novel spent 164 weeks (over three years) on the New York Times bestseller list and was the top bestseller in 1993. According to Bookreport.com, the novel is the number one bestselling hardcover novel of all time. Two of Waller’s novels, The Bridges of Madison County (starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep) and Puerto Vallarta Squeeze, have been made into motion pictures. As a companion to the movie, Waller composed songs for the album, The Ballads of Madison County, which was released in 1993.
In 2012, Waller donated a seven figure estate gift to Indiana University to be used for the School of Music, the Kelley School of Business, the University Libraries and Research, and University Graduate School (RUGS). The donation included a bequest to the copyrights to all of his literature, art, and music and Waller’s ranch in Texas (where he currently lives).
