Welcome to the Iowa Center for the Book

The Iowa Center for the Book (ICB) is a program of Iowa Library Services/State Library of Iowa and an affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.  Founded in 2002, ICB's mission is to stimulate public interest in books, reading, literacy and libraries.  To fulfill this mission the ICB offers a variety of programs and resources. Iowa Students and Teachers Lauded for Responding to Letters About Literature Program

The national Letters About Literature reading/writing contest deadline arrived on January 6, 2012 this year. "Once again, Iowa's participation is extraordinary given the population of our state,"said Robin Martin, coordinator for the Iowa Center for the Book. "Only five states had more entries than Iowa."

One Book Two Book: A Celebration of Children's Literature

Iowa Center for the Book staff to exhibit at the UNESCO City of Literature Children's Book Fair. "Strength in What Remains" by Tracy Kidder

The Iowa Center for the Book proudly announces that 2012 All Iowa Reads selection is "Strength in What Remains" by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder. The book tells the true story of Deogratias, a young physician from Burundi, who survives genocide only to find himself a homeless emegre in America. Deo never succumbs to the despair, isolation and prejudice he finds in New York City. He draws on inner strength to overcome all odds, graduate from Columbia University and return to his native land to open health clinics there. Dark, but not without hope and full of forgiveness, this is a must read for all Iowans.

Iowa Goes to the National Book Festival

Representatives of the Iowa Center for the Book will attend the National Book Festival in Washington, DC on September 24, 2011, to promote Iowa's rich literary and cultural heritage. "The independent organization COSLA has granted the Center $2,000 to support Iowa's participation," said Mary Wegner, State Librarian. "We'll be among the fifty state Centers for the Book that greet the 100,000 visitors who attend each year."
