Literary Event Edgar Allan Poe 200th birthday celebration
On Monday, January 19, 2009, the Bettendorf Public Library will host a celebration of the Bicentennial of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe with a cake reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by readings of Poe's work, the recitation of original poems, an original monologue, musical tributes from Poe's time and original contemporary compositions performed by a variety of local professors, actors, authors, and musicians.

Literary Event An Afternoon with the Author: Dorothy Francis
Sunday, January 11 at 2pm, Farwell T. Brown Auditorium, Ames Public Library. Come to the Library for an afternoon with Iowa author Dorothy Francis, who has published over 74 books for children and adults. Her newest book, "Eden Palms Murder," follows a singer songwriter turned amateur sleuth.
Literary Event Adult Book Discussion: Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston
Join in the discussion of "Their Eyes Were Watching God", at the Forest Avenue Branch of the Des Moines Public Library, 1326 Forest Avenue, on Monday, January 12 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. This novel is the book for this year's Big Read, a program that provides the opportunity for large communities to read and discuss a single book. This author is considered one of the pre-eminent writers of twentieth-century African-American literature.
Literary Event Adult Book Discussion: Escape, by Carolyn Jessop
Discuss the book "Escape," the dramatic first-person account of life inside an ultra-fundamentalist polygamist sect and one woman's courageous flight to freedom with her children. The author was forced at age 18 into an arranged marriage with a man thirty-eight years her senior who already had three wives. Fifteen years later, she and her children escaped. Treats provided. Literary Event Program on Zora Neale Hurston, author of Their Eyes Were Watching God
In partnership with The Big Read program and the African American Historical Museum and Cultural Center of Iowa, author Dr. Catherine A. Stewart will explore aspects of Zora Neale Hurston's life and work as a folklorist. Dr. Stewart explains in her book "Feast, Flood, and Famine: Zora Neale Hurston's Search for African American Folk Culture", how Hurston, using the simple metaphor of food and the more violent one of floodwaters, draws out the social rituals of sorrow, communion, and celebration. The Big Read provides the opportunity for communities to read and discuss a single book. At the Des Moines Central Library, 1000 Grand Avenue, on Wednesday, January 21 at 6:00 p.m.
Literary Event Literacy in a Different Way: Girl With a Pearl Earring
All ages are welcome to come learn more about the historical novel Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. It takes place in Delft, Holland, and was inspired by Vermeer's painting with the same title. In Meeting Room One of the Des Moines Central Library, 1000 Grand Avenue, on Tuesday, January 20 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. Books are available for checkout at the reference desk.
