Comments from the author about writing: I have been a professional travel and features writer for magazines and newspapers for almost 15 years now. Running Away to Home is my first book, about how my family and I chucked it all and returned to the Croatian mountain village of my ancestors to start over again as a family, and as Americans. I like to think of the book as what happens in between all the perfect stuff you see in magazine travel stories--I had always wanted to write a true travelogue that tells everything about an epic adventure, both the good and the bad. I'd also wanted to write an adventure travel book for regular people. So often, I think we get intimidated by big adventure, as if it's relegated to ultra-athletes in Outside magazine and Jon Krakauer. I wanted to write about a daring adventure for a middle-class, Midwestern family. I am available to speak about my book, Running Away to Home, and our family experiences in Croatia discovering our genealogy and other life lessons.
