Comments from the author about writing: My writing is done slowly and with much thought. I spent years researching A Place of Refuge, to have the book as historically correct as possible. It reflects what is very important to me: faith, family and farming. If I'm not writing, my mind is never far from it, whether weeding in the garden or washing dishes. I have often and still do admire writing that inspires, encourages and teaches and that is what I hope to do in everything I write.
In April, 2016 A Place of New Beginnings was published. It is a sequel to A Place of Refuge. The book opens with Elsje Van Der Zuiden and her family in their covered wagons ready to begin their journey to northwest Iowa. Their adventures include a wagon in trouble in rising waters, horse thieves and life in a sod house. All are based on true historical happenings.
Renae B. Vander Schaaf also has a slide presentation that complements the two books.
