I am a former newspaper reporter and columnist who wrote for several papers in Iowa and Illinois. I am a 1987 graduate of the University of Iowa journalism school. While working for The Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune, I met Mark Knudsen of Des Moines, who had a crazy idea of going down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to the mouth at flood stage in a homemade boat and writing about it for our paper as he went. I helped shepherd his story into a series for our newspaper and Mark and I turned his voyage into the book, Old Man River and Me.
