Comments from the author about writing:
I write what I know and what I love. "Hazel Twigg" combines three things that fall into both those categories.
The first: nine years ago, I fell in love with Iowa. I'd lived in California, Hawaii, and England among other places, but when I crossed the border into Iowa I knew I was home. Iowans are a quirky people and things took some getting used to, but I wouldn't change a thing.
The second: MAGIC. Early influences include every Oz book I could get my hands on. I love the idea of traditionally inanimate creatures, scarecrows for example, coming to life.
The third: I love old composition (sawdust and glue) dolls from the 1920s and 30s. I love the detail of their tin eyes and mohair wigs, and the care that went into the manufacturing of these inexpensive little companions that came along right when America needed them most: the Great Depression.
I've combined all three of these loves in this book, with strangers arriving in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, old dolls come to life, and magic.
"Hazel Twigg & the Hollyhock Hideaway" is the first in a series. It is novel length at 410 pages, yet it's illustrated to widen its appeal.
Book Types: Fiction

If you are willing to do programs, will you charge a fee? Travel reimbursement, depending on how far the location is from Rolfe. I do great shows! Lots of visual aids and the like. Hazel Twigg is beautifully illustrated by our artist Nina Khalova of the Ukraine (interesting story to how we found her) and I have the original illustrations. I also bring some of my old dolls that I restore. Some who are permanent characters from the book, and others who are just passing through. I read from the book. "It's like story time for adults!" several people have said. When I'm reading, you can hear a pin drop. It's very rewarding.
