Comments from the author about writing: I’m not sure when I first knew that I wanted to be a writer. It’s been part of my identity – part of how I saw myself – for as long as I can remember. As a little girl I was always making up stories, little plays for my dolls to act out. To give you a little insight into me, when I was growing up my family used to go to West Virginia every summer to visit my grandparents. I don’t remember how this got started, but when I was about 7 or 8 my grandpa started taking me with him to his office. He would let me use one of the typewriters. I fell in love. Here was a way to get my thoughts on paper and I could actually read it afterwards because my handwriting’s not so good. When I was 9, Grandpa announced that he was going to buy my two older brothers and me each a bicycle. I asked him if I could have a typewriter instead. I didn’t realize it then, but I had just taken my first giant step into nerddom. As I progressed in school, I always loved English and writing classes. I loved any class where we would get creative writing assignments. I always had a story percolating in my head, so there was never a problem coming up with material. And that’s pretty much how I still am. I love to write. There are few things I'd rather be doing at any given time.
