Comments from the author about writing:
Writing has always been my vocation, a process of discovery and improvisation. When I begin writing, I feel as if I know where I'm heading.
Yet I'm often surprised by the direction my characters and imagination take me. I consider picture books to be small works of art, wonderful collaborations between writer and artist that deepen the meaning and experience of reading. My greatest hope is that one of my books will become a child's treasured possession. Is there any deeper pleasure than to hear a child say, "let's read that book again!" That's the reason I write.
