I feel very fortunate that I have had the luck of knowing the musicians
who make this particular kind of music. I did not set out to record a
historical account of all of the musicians in and around Iowa City. My
new book, Down to the River; Portraits of Iowa Musicians, is about a certain community
of artists living in Iowa and their music. The photographs hold many
wonderful memories of great music and friends dancing and enjoying
life. I took my camera to the clubs and concerts to be part of the
music. Being on the dance floor with a camera…with the energy of the
music…inspires my images. The commissioned portraits in the book were
taken over the years, each one is an honest collaboration between the
musician and myself.
