Plot Twist Bookstore is hosting an author event with Alan Loots, author of Storm Lake. With a Journalism degree from Drake University, Alan’s professional background is in TV and film production, broadcast journalism and advertising. Born in Carroll, Iowa, he became a professional drummer at age ten, playing in his dad’s dance orchestra. His family moved to Des Moines when he was fourteen and throughout high school, he developed interests and skills in film, photography and writing.
During college, he was hired as a sports cinematographer for a local television station and also began to write music. He spent a summer in Nashville and placed a pop song with a major music publishing company, but it was never recorded. He later recorded and released two original songs on a record that received regional airplay and sold several hundred copies.
After college, he worked at Iowa Public Television and later at the Des Moines CBS affiliate as a news cinematographer. He then began writing screenplays and freelance articles, selling several travel features to The Des Moines Register. He also was a key grip on a motion picture filmed in Colorado. Alan was a television advertising account executive for 25 years, most recently working for Hearst Television.
During his school years, Alan became interested in writing by reading science fiction and biographies of American heroes. Later, his interests changed to suspense novels by many authors, including Robert Ludlum, one of his favorites.
Alan’s published works, include the suspense novel, Storm Lake and “The Cold Diary”. He is writing a new novel entitled, Triangleville.
