The Iowa Center for the Book, a program of the State Library of Iowa and an affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book has named “Raising Reading in Story County” the winner of the 2015 Iowa Literacy Award.
“As part of a pilot project, the Iowa Center for the Book received a generous donation made possible by American philanthropist and financier David Rubenstein and the Library of Congress to recognize an organization that has made an outstanding contribution to increasing literacy in our state,” said Robin Martin, Coordinator for the ICB. “Dozens of organizations are dedicated to fostering literacy in Iowa, but their work often goes unnoticed. This annual award will help draw attention to best practices.”
Founded in 2000, “Raising Readers” is a grass-roots organization that provides language and literacy improvement programs to Iowa children from birth to eight years and to their families. Staff and volunteers manage 10 separate research-based initiatives focusing on school readiness, school attendance, and summer learning. An Internet-accessible tool kit is being developed to help communities and counties throughout Iowa develop their own “Raising Readers” programming.
“RRSC has become an organization whose fine reputation is known throughout Ames and Story County,” said Jean Kresse of United Way Story County. Partnerships with physicians, dentists, local churches, county-wide food pantries, libraries, and school districts have engendered community-wide ownership and respect throughout Story County.
“Volunteers throughout Story County provided more than 7000 hours in 2014 and again in 2015,” said Sue Seaton, President of the Board of Raising Readers in Story County. “RRSC’s reputation of quality researched-based programming and initiatives throughout Iowa are unmatched and noted nationally. We are honored to have our work recognized by such a prestigious organization as the Library of Congress in partnership with the State Library of Iowa and its Center for the Book.”
The Iowa Center for the Book Literacy Award 2015 in the amount of $750 will be awarded to Raising Readers at a ceremony in the State Law Library of Iowa in the Capitol Building October 9th at 1pm. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP email@example.com
