Pulitzer Prize winning author, Jane Smiley, will be the featured speaker at the Des Moines Public Library Foundation’s Iowa Author Awards Dinner on October 27, 2015. The event will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown. The dinner is the signature fundraising event for the Library Foundation
The Iowa Author Awards celebrate Iowa’s rich literary heritage by recognizing authors whose background, history and inspiration include Iowa. Author honorees have written and published works of literary merit. This year’s honorees are: Tim Johnston – Iowa Author, Dr. Neil Nakadate – Iowa Author, Dr. William Friedricks – Special Interest Iowa Author, and Claudia McGehee – Children’s Iowa Author.
Jane Smiley received her Master’s and PhD from the University of Iowa. She taught English at Iowa State University for fifteen years before returning to her native state of California. Smiley has published more than 25 novels for adults and young adults, as well as several short story collections. In 1992, her novel A Thousand Acres won a Pulitzer Prize. Smiley was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001 and received the PEN USA Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature in 2006. Her latest novels, Some Luck (2014) and Early Warning (2015), are part of a trilogy involving an Iowa family over the course of several generations. Some Luck was a National Book Award Nominee. The third book, Golden Age, will be released October 20.
