All Iowa Reads
Iowa Valley Continuing Education is hosting two opportunities for All Iowa Reads-Digging to America by Anne Tyler. Both sessions are open to the public, and there is no charge. Interested persons need to pre register by contacting Lorraine White at 641-752-4745 x5606 or Lorraine.White@iavalley.edu. The first discussion is Wednesday June 18th, 2008 from 9-11 a.m. and the second discussion is Wednesday, July 9th, from 6-8 p.m. Both discussions will be in Room 105. Iowa Valley Continuing Education is located at 3702 South Center Street in Marshalltown, Iowa
Sioux City Public Library: Read, View, Discuss
The Sioux City Public Library is sponsoring a summer book and movie mini-series for area readers that will focus on the themes of father and son relationships, parent-child aspirations and expectations, and mentoring. Participants read each book independently then convene on a Saturday afternoon at the Library to view the film adaptation. Movies are shown free of charge at The Wilbur Aalfs (Main) Library at 2 p.m. on Saturdays, with book discussions immediately following. "Seabiscuit: An American Legend" by Laura Hillenbrand will be discussed June 7. Participants will explore "Searching for Bobby Fischer: The Father of a Prodigy Observes the World of Chess" on July 12, and "Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions" by Daniel Wallace on August 16.
Sioux City Public Library Book Discussion
The OPEN BOOK club meets at 6:30 p.m. the first Monday of the month (2nd Monday when Library is closed for a holiday) at the Morningside Branch Library, 4005 Morningside Ave, Sioux City. June: "Eat, Pray, Love--One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia" by Elizabeth Gilbert. July: "The Time Traveler’s Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. August: "Garden Spells" by Sara Addison Allen. September: "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Kahled Hosseini.
